Water Heaters - Repair

As toilets, piping systems, and water heaters become more advanced, the need for licensed plumbers is increasing.  As the need goes up, so too does the cost of service.  Hiring a professional plumber has become very expensive.  When it comes to water heaters, repair can be downright unaffordable.  Here are some tips on how to perform some common repairs yourself so that you can save a lot of money, and not have to be without hot water for an extended period of time.

What to do if your water heater is leaking.  This is one of the most common problems with all water heating appliances.  While it is a very common problem, it is also usually a very easy fix.  The first step is to determine where the leak is coming from.  Almost always, it will be from either the tank, the pipes or the drain valve.  If the leak is in the pipes, this will be the most serious repair.  However, patches and plugs are available at any hardware store and can be easily installed.  If it's the drain valve, nine times out of ten, tightening it will fix the leak.  Lastly, if the leak is in the tank, it is usually cheapest to just buy a new tank and install it yourself.

Temperature issues.  Sometimes due to insulation problems or a faulty heating element, the water may come out inconsistently hot or cold.  To fix this, follow the steps in the owner's manual to determine if this problem is being caused by the heating element or the insulation of the tank.  If it's the heating element, you can easily buy a new one and replace it.  If it's the tank, removing the tank and lining it with insulation is simple and effective.

Pilot light keeps going out.  While this is one of the most common problems, it is also one of the easiest to solve.  Simply clean the orifice and remove any debris that may be blocking it.  Your pilot light should be fine after doing this.
