Inline Water Heaters - Pros And Cons

For the majority of people, the choice of what type of water heater to use in their homes comes down to two styles.  The traditional style of water heating appliance that has a tank, and the new inline water heater that has no tank.  (Those who live in extremely cold climates can even choose to use an indirect water heater.)  There are advantages to owning an inline unit and there are disadvantages as well.  The biggest of both are listed below.

Advantages:  Inline hot water heaters work much faster to create hot water.  Most reviews from consumers who own them say that the water is hot within just a few seconds.  This is not only convenient, but it is also a money saver.  You waste much less water than you do with a traditional unit so your water bill is much less.

In addition to savings on your water bill, it is believed by most that inline units use less energy than traditional units.  Some reviews report electricity or gas savings of as much as 30%.

Inline units are easier on the environment.  Not only do they cut down on the amount of energy required for operation, they also produce much less waste and pollution.  Disadvantages:  The biggest disadvantage is their initial cost.  They are more expensive that traditional water heaters and depending on the brand, they can be much more expensive.  Weighing the initial cost with the potential monthly savings is important to do before deciding on which style to purchase.  Because the heating element is directly in the pipe that the water flows through, inline units are not believed to be as durable as water heaters with tanks are.  In addition, they require repair and maintenance more often.  While there is no specific evidence to say just how much more durable traditional units are, it is known throughout the industry that the difference is significant.

There is not enough evidence yet to say how they compare to regular water heaters. My guess is that they will be as durable, if not more durable. They are smaller and have a lot less parts.

I don't get why there are so many questions about durability. i have had mine for over 7 years and it is still working as good today as when i first bought it.

These units are so great for providing hot water instantly and for lowering monthly bills so much, i dont' think it matters how durable they are. at least that is the case with me. i love them no matter what. if mine breaks down in one year, then i will just get another one. i would have saved money regardless.

I am no professional plumber but using common sense, i can see how the durability would be a questionh. water runs directly over the heating element all the time. sooner or later, rust or other corrosion has to occur.

the durability of these inlines are what is at question. i have talked to several plumbers that say they are not as long lasting as water heaters that have tanks in them are.

I actually love it because i hate waiting for warm water to brush my teeth. the cold water hurts my teethe and gums. the water comes out instantly warm within just a few seconds.

The best thing about tankless water heaters is that you never have to wait for the hot water. I used to stand there freezing cold wating for the water to get hot but no more.
