Understanding The Indirect Water Heater

Unless you are a professional plumber, or live in a very cold climate, you are probably not familiar with the indirect water heater.  Mostly used on the East Coast and in some areas of the Mid West, these water heating appliances are unique in their approach to heating your water.

Unlike traditional units, these indirect units use the already existing heating unit used to heat the air in your home as their heating source.  There is no need for a seperate fuel source, they work off of what you are already using.  Therefore, as you probably have guessed, they work more efficiently than the traditional style.

Unlike the new demand or tankless units, indirects use a tank.  The tank is always made of stainless steel and is better insulated than traditional tanks.  There is also a mechanism inside the tank that stirs the water inside making sure that all of it stays a consistently hot temperature.

They can tie into any furnace or boiler and the fuel source that is used to run the boiler or furnace doesn't matter.  These water heaters can run off of solar, gas, oil or electricity.  It is estimated by many experts that the savings you will experience with an instant water heater versus a traditional one can be as high as 25%.  Of course, fuel costs in your area and the amount you use will affect this number.  Other advantages of them are argued by many to be increased durability and less of an impact on the environment.  It is really a question of preference and individual water usage whether or not it would make sense for you to use one of these water heaters in your home.

you have to be in cold climates because that is where it makes the most sense to use them. in order for them to be more efficient, you have to have an extremely cold climate where it takes a lot to keeep the water hot.

i don't get why these units are only used in really cold climate places? shouldn't everyone use them if they are so good at saving money? why do you only have to be in a really cold spot?

It is very true that indirect water heaters save a lot of money on your utility bills. My last one was electric and when i bought the indirect one my bills went down by like 40%.
